Paddington Bear has made the move from Westquay and found a new spot at Guildhall Square. The much-loved bear has settled to tuck into his marmalade sandwich on a bench in the heart of the Square, surrounded by brand new plants and flowers from The Garden Society.

First arriving in Southampton in October last year, he’s one of 23 statues installed across the UK to celebrate the release of ‘Paddington in Peru’.

The installation and planters have been funded by GO! Southampton with support from John Hansard Gallery and Studio Canal.

Executive Director of GO! Southampton Stephen Manion said: “Paddington’s had a great stay at Westquay, but it’s time for him to see some new sights! We were thrilled to first welcome the statue to the town and it’s really made its mark – I’m looking forward to seeing Paddington breathe some new life into the square.”

Communications Manager at John Hansard Gallery Jack Lewis said:  “We are delighted to welcome Paddington to Guildhall Square and are already seeing the joy he brings to local people, families, and visitors to our city. Paddington is a beloved British icon, who has strong ties to the UK’s history and heritage, so he is a fantastic addition to the city’s Cultural Quarter!”

Stephanie Mann, Marketing & Events Director at The Garden Society said: “We were thrilled to be asked to create a natural landscape for Paddington Bear, not only do these visual planters bring a new layer of excitement to the installation but the sentiment for adding plants into an urban environment is positive, offering benefits for everyone, including Paddington! Adding a daily dose of nature and wellbeing, visitors can take time out to enjoy the value of nature in the city, whilst adding pollinator plants such as Echinacea, encourages new friends to keep Paddington company.

We have created a vibrant palette of orange and yellow hues, inspired by Paddington’s love for marmalade. Rudbeckia adds late summer colour whilst Escallonia provides beautiful year-round displays with its waxy deep green leaves, creating an everlasting impact that everyone can enjoy. Heuchera are easy to grow and maintain, and suitable for borders, pots, and containers. Skimma is an evergreen shrub, an excellent choice for year-round interest with berries in the winter and new foliage in spring. This collection blends drought-tolerant and aromatic plants with a pop of colour, perfect for its location.”
