Southampton’s very own ‘urban beach’ has opened to the public as Seaside in the Square kicks off today (July 19).

For the next three weeks, Guildhall Square will be awash with sand as the popular event, sponsored by Carnival UK, returns to the city for a second year.

There will be hundreds of free activities for people to take part in. They include everything from arts and crafts to skateboarding, yoga and bootcamp classes. There will be regular live music, theatre and storytelling in association with Nuffield Southampton and live outdoor cinema screenings thanks to City Eye.

Several local bars and restaurants will host special events at the beach, including Nandos and Revolución de Cuba. YMCA, the event’s official community partner, will also hold a special ‘takeover’ day to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

On Monday (July 22) a giant inflatable whale, the length of a bus, will take centre stage at the beach in a bid to educate people about plastic pollution. Children and families will be able to go inside the whale and learn all about the impact plastic can have on marine life through storytelling. The whale is visiting as part of Solent University’s Save the Oceans Day, which will also feature insightful talks from experts on the main stage.

The event, which is free to attend and open every day until August 11, has been made possible thanks to GO! Southampton, the city’s BID (Business Improvement District).

Giles Semper, the BID’s chief executive, said: “We are very excited to bring the beach to Southampton yet again. It’s great for residents, workers in the city and the many tourists who visit Southampton every summer. The line-up of events and activities for this year is even bigger and better than before so there really is something for everyone.”

Josh Weinstein, president of Carnival UK, which is sponsoring the event, added: “Many of our employees talked about how much they enjoyed Seaside in the Square last year so we’re thrilled to be involved this year as official sponsor. With its holiday vibe and activities for all ages and tastes, it will provide Southampton’s residents and workers with a fun place to chill out along with a taste of the relaxation, indulgence and adventure which typify a holiday with us.”
