Southampton shoppers will be able to hunt for everything from vintage clothing to vinyl records at Carlton Place’s new monthly markets.

Supported by the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), GO! Southampton, the Carlton Place market will take place on the last Sunday of every month, starting on 24 May, from 11am to 4pm.

The market is set to host local traders including Mettricks’ new bakery in Portswood, Vinilo Records, Jude’s Ice Cream, Blue Hour Coffee, Claudia & B Floristry, Southampton Chiropractors clinic and Trenz hair braids for kids.

Visitors can expect a wide range of stalls from artisan food and drink to handmade crafts. Designed to be a ‘mini car boot sale’, guests are also invited to declutter their own homes with their own ‘suitcase stalls’.

Families are welcome too with activities for kids, face painting, a free play area in Carlton Place Circle, preloved kids clothing stalls and tote bag making. The market will have its own art section, working with some of the city’s most influential people to show off what the city has to offer.

GO! Southampton is proud to be sponsoring the new market as part of its wider work to enhance the city centre and back local businesses. Also supporting the markets is ‘Flo’s Flea Market’ from Southampton Common’s Old Chapel – a beloved local market known for its eclectic mix of stalls selling second hand clothes, jewellery and vintage pieces.

In addition to the daytime markets, a new series of night markets on every first Friday will also be introduced later in the year to bring a new atmosphere to Carlton Place after dark and appeal to those looking for something different from their usual night out.

Organiser Mikha Rai said: “Our market is using Frome Independent market as inspiration, a thriving market with a unique feel and atmosphere. We want them to show off the city’s independent scene and deliver a brilliant day out for all ages. Bedford Place is a hub for the city’s very best small businesses, so it’s the perfect setting for our market. Better still, everyone’s welcome to set up a stall and give their own pieces a second life. It’s a space to meet up, get out and about this summer and discover something new.”

Deputy Executive Director of GO! Southampton Gemma Pratt said: “The market not only brings one of Southampton’s hotspots to life with buzz and activity once a month, but it also benefits surrounding businesses too. We know how important it is to create reasons for people to come into the city centre and spend time here. These markets offer a great mix of food, shopping and atmosphere – they’re something people can look forward to every month.”

Want to get involved?

As part of GO! Southampton’s sponsorship, we have been allocated two complimentary stall spaces at each market. Spaces will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis so if you are interested, please let us know. To help ensure the opportunity remains fair to all businesses, stalls cannot be booked for consecutive market dates and must not compete with other businesses in the area.

GO! Southampton may also use one of the allocated spaces to host a visitor information stand. This stand will feature relevant BID member leaflets alongside wider visitor information for the city centre. If you are a visitor-facing business and would like to provide us with printed materials, please contact marketing@gosouthampton.co.uk.
