Southampton City of Culture – Business Focus Group
February 24 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Dear Business Colleagues,
Southampton is currently bidding to become UK City of Culture 2025 and we want you to be part of the journey.
Successful Cities of Culture, like Hull (which has a lot of similarities with Southampton) have completely transformed their city through this process. There is no reason why, with every opportunity, Southampton cannot follow suit. We are currently the only city in the region bidding for this accolade, and it has never been hosted in the south. It is not often we will get an opportunity like this; we need to harness it and ensure that we position and articulate our need accordingly.
In order to do this however, we need your help. This process is meaningless unless it’s meaningful to the people of Southampton and our needs. With many city and regional stakeholders already on board, we are keen to work with different organisations and individuals across the city to represent a diversity of perspectives and draw on to access the skills and talent we have within the city to help guide the approach. You have been chosen for your knowledge, expertise and positioning within Southampton’s business community.
As work is quickly progressing a set of themed groups and sub-groups have been formed to help shape, coordinate and manage activity related to the bid, these groups will continue to evolve throughout the bid process and additional stakeholders will be invited to attend once the groups start to meet. These groups are vital to the success of the bid, and we would like to invite you to join our Business Focus Group. The aim of this group is for you and other stakeholders to contribute to the bids development by providing advice, views and opinions related to this subject. As things develop, we might ask you to contribute towards specific pieces of work related to the bid if you can, and we will ask for you to support us with linking up with existing or planned activity or groups related to the bid that you know about already.
The groups in the bid are: Research, Consultation and Evaluation; Programming and Community; Marketing and Communications; Culture and Health; Volunteering; Fundraising and Regional. Each of these groups also has subject or task specific groups within it such as; Heritage, Visual Arts etc.
The first meeting of the Business Focus Group will be held from 5pm – 6.30pm on Wednesday 24th February, with a follow up in March.
It would be great to have you on board to help steer this journey; however, if this is not possible for whatever reason, please be assured that we would still be keen to hear your thoughts. This can be done through arranging a meeting with Gemma Nichols, Commercial Director, Southampton 2025 UK City of Culture email@example.com. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to attend.
This is an exciting time to be involved in Southampton. Claire Whitaker was appointed last year as our Bid Director, with her national track record of delivery, our partners and your input, together we can shape our future and unleash the potential inherent in our great city.
With very best wishes,
City of Culture Bid Team
