Southampton bids for slice of £44m historic high street funding

GO! Southampton has worked with Southampton City Council to bid for a slice of £44m worth of funding from Historic England to improve the city’s historic high street.

A bid was made in July, with a focus on the Old Town North, West and South Conservation Areas of Southampton. The proposals include physical improvements to the Bargate, Holyrood Church, vaults and walls.

The application was based on reclaiming Southampton’s heritage and aligns with the Heritage Strategy and subsequent Heritage Action Plan for the city. The scheme will also allow for a cultural programme to be developed to activate the heritage assets.

If successful, the programme of improvements could take place from April 2020 to March 2024. It’s expected to be a toughly-fought competition to secure the funding, with high streets across the country all keen for a slice of the action. Up to 60 historic high streets could benefit from the scheme.
