Suzanne Shaw to join a list of stars to Light up Southampton for Christmas

Live music, fireworks and stars from screen and stage will launch Southampton’s Christmas celebrations on Thursday 15 November from 4pm, taking over the heart of the city with a free event set to get Southampton in the Christmas mood.

The Countdown to Christmas event, one of the region’s largest, is organised by GO! Southampton Business Improvement District (BID) in collaboration with The Marlands Shopping Centre and Southampton City Council.  It will feature live acts ranging from local musicians to stars of Mayflower Theatre’s pantomime, Dick Whittington, and Nuffield Southampton Theatre’s (NST) Christmas production, Billionaire Boy.

During the event, more than 250,000 LEDs making up Southampton’s best-ever Christmas lighting display will illuminate the city ready for the festive season.

Over 4000 people attended an event last year which signalled the start of Christmas.  This year, Above Bar Street will be pedestrianised right up to Civic Centre Road to allow everyone to celebrate and to see the large stage, which will be located just opposite Nationwide bank.

The stage will come to life at 4pm with an exciting programme of performers including local band Galaxy Thieves and Ryan Heenan, star of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy who will perform a song from the show which runs at Nuffield Southampton Theatres this Christmas.

Pop and television star Suzanne Shaw, who rose to fame via the popular ITV talent search Popstars and the music group Hearsay, and star of Mayflower Theatre’s Dick Whittington, will be joined by fellow cast member Andrew Ryan as the Dame to lead the crowd in the countdown. The evening rounds off with the first flight of the ever-popular Flying Santa, taking off from the Bargate at 7pm.

Tim Keeping, General Manager of The Marlands and Chair of the Business Improvement District said,

“This year’s “Countdown to Christmas” will be bigger and better than anything we’ve had in Southampton at Christmas before, with a line-up which reflects the perfect balance we have in Southampton of promoting home-grown talent and attracting world-class performers.”
