On 20 July, GO! Southampton’s Seaside in the Square will open to the public, kicking off 34 days full of free events and activities in Guildhall Square.
The 480m2 beach, complete with stage, screen and outdoor bar will play host to yoga lessons, beach fitness, outdoor cinema, sand castle competitions, live music, beach soccer training and lots more. The full list of more than 100 events is available at www.seasideinthequare.com.
As well as the activities taking place on the beach, there will also be a giant deckchair trail which will take families on an adventure around the city from Bedford Place and London Road in the north to Town Quay in the South, ending with a prize to be collected from the beach.
The event is going to be huge amount of fun, but there are clear objectives to be achieved by it:
- To deliver a great city experience for people living in, working in and visiting Southampton
- To engender a sense of pride in the city
- To put Southampton on the map through positive PR
- To increase footfall into the city centre and encouraging repeat visits.
- To generate a positive economic impact for local businesses
In order to measure how well Seaside in the Square achieves those objectives, we will be measuring footfall, keeping a track of media coverage, asking local businesses to share sales comparison figures with the same period last year and conducting short surveys with visitors. The results will be published in our winter newsletter.
Seaside in the Square is already generating great excitement, with 1,100 people interested in the event on Facebook and free tickets to the outdoor cinema sessions “selling” incredibly quickly. A contra deal with Celador (Sam Fm, The Breeze) will bring further exposure, as will posters, flyers and printed programmes around the city. If you would like any printed collateral to put up / out in your businesses, please call 02380 003637 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
