GO! Southampton, is running a Christmas window competition in the independent shopping areas of Bedford Place, London Road and East Street. Over 35 businesses are taking part in the competition, and the public are being asked to vote for their favourite window. All voters will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher for the participating business of their choice.
The whole idea of the competition is to shine a spotlight on the lesser known, independent areas of the city which boast an incredibly diverse offering of shops and services. From hair, beauty and tattoo studios to independent clothes, shoes and music shops, to bars, cafes and restaurants, these independent areas offer a huge amount of choice.
The BID has teamed up with traders’ associations in both areas to encourage participation from as many businesses as possible and Vice Chair of the BID, Spencer Bowman is pleased with the response:
“Go! Southampton is dedicated to supporting businesses in all areas of the BID zone, so encouraging footfall into these exciting but sometimes overlooked areas of town is really important to us. I’m delighted at the level of participation in the Winning Winter Windows competition and look forward to making my way around them all and choosing my favourite.”
Bedford Place trader and BID board member Caroline French was instrumental in getting the competition going.
“The independent traders have made a real effort with their Winter window displays, which has given Bedford Place a really Christmassy feel. It’s exciting to be in an area where traders really care about their customers shopping experience and we are looking forward to lots of members of the public taking part by voting for their winning window.”
Members of the public can pick up a voting card in any of the participating shops or cut out the version to be printed in the Daily Echo. Voters must choose their top 3 windows and write them on the voting card together with their name and email address or phone number. They then simply drop their card into the box in one of the following shops:
East Street: British Red Cross and Ponden Homes
Bedford Place: Electric Bike World, WJ French, The Photo Rooms
London Road: The Colour Company
There is also the option to vote via the GO! Southampton Facebook page at facebook.com/gosoton. All voters, no matter how their vote is cast, will be entered into a draw to win a £100 voucher for the participating business of their choice. There will be one winner for East Street and one winner for Bedford Place / London Road, so everyone is encouraged to take part in both competitions.
As well as the public vote, a panel of judges including merchandising experts from John Lewis and Ikea, have been invited select a winner. The winning windows and the winning voters will all be announced in the paper and online on 21st December.
In addition to the window competition, the Bedford Place Traders’ Association is hoping to encourage visitors to the area on Thursday 7th December for their Christmas Spectacular. The fun starts at 4pm with carol signing, mulled wine, mince pies and array of special offers and freebies from shops throughout Bedford Place.
